Golf has been played over the St Andrews links for 600 years, over 75 years more than Carnoustie. Like Carnoustie, the product of this long history is a masterpiece.

The Old Course originally consisted of 22 holes. In 1764, the Society of St. Andrews Golfers decided that some holes were too short and combined them. The result was an 18 hole golf course.

When Old Tom Morris layed out the 18th hole in the late 19th century it became possible to play the Old Course in an anti-clockwise direction. In fact, for years after golf over

the links was played clockwise one week, and anti-clockwise the following week. The result, as hazards had to face both ways, many of the courses 112 bunkers face the opposite direction! These 'hidden' bunkers can cause problems, as sometimes you can

hit what you think is a safe shot and find yourself in the sand.

Another unique feature of the old course is the size of it's greens. There are seven double greens, some of which are more than an acre in size! There are occasions where you could be left with a 100 yard putt!

Not a particularly 'fair' course, unfair bounces can get you into all sorts of trouble, however this shouldn't detract. It's the way golf was supposed to be.

Overall its a magical course that is loved by all.
